Northerly swells are predicted this weekend, and as a result, the Barbados Meteorological Services is warning Barbadians and visitors on island to avoid beaches along the West coast.
Director Sabu Best said that the northerly swells could wrap around the island and present as unusual wave activity along the West coast from Speightstown, St Peter down to Paynes Bay and One Sandy Lane, St James.
“There is a possibility that the surf can pick up on the West coast… We expect to see a pick up in surf conditions along the Western sections of Barbados, along the coastline, so you will see some choppy surf conditions along the coasts from Saturday, Sunday and it could go into Monday.”
Best also urged citizens, residents and visitors to visit only beaches with on-duty lifeguards. He said it could be a matter of life and death.
“If you see unusual surf activity at the beaches, it is advisable not to go into the water.”
