German election results live: CDU, AfD expect to make gains as count begins

Germany’s election authority says 52 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballots four hours before the closure of polling stations.
Pre-election polls show the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leading with 30 percent, the far-right Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) slated to take 20 percent, and the incumbent Social Democratic Party (SPD) in third place with 15 percent.
